We Are Messengers
Appearing on Unity Main Stage Presented by Country Dairy – 2024 – Saturday, August 10, 2024
Led by Irish singer/guitarist/songwriter Darren Mulligan, We Are Messengers make anthemic Christian music with a bright, adult alternative sound and a penetrating message of hope. Known for the hit Christian singles “Come What May” and “Maybe It’s OK,” the group landed in the Christian Top Ten in 2016 with their eponymous debut album and returned to the charts with Power and Wholehearted, released in 2020 and 2021, respectively. They were followed by collaborations with country legend Vince Gill (“Image of God”) and rapper KB (a 2023 remake of “Wholehearted”).
Founded in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2015 after Darren and his wife, singer Heidi Mulligan, relocated from Monaghan, Ireland, We Are Messengers’ original lineup featured both Mulligans, guitarist Caleb Clingan, bassist Matthew Montgomery, and drummer Alex McVey. The group released their first album, We Are Messengers, in April 2016 on Word Records, which had signed Mulligan after hearing his prior band, the Remission Flow. With radio support for songs like “Everything Comes Alive” and “Magnify,” the album debuted at number ten on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart and led to a Dove Award nomination for New Artist of the Year.
In 2017, the We Are Messengers song “I’ll Think About You” was written for and featured on the soundtrack to the film The Shack. Still charting with songs from their debut in 2018, they also had a minor hit with “Needing You Now,” a collaboration with Meredith Andrews from the Word compilation My Utmost for His Highest. They returned in November of that year with “Maybe It’s Ok,” the first single from their sophomore album, Power, which arrived in early 2020 and featured a re-tooled lineup consisting of Mulligan, Kyle Williams (guitar), Drew Kerxton (drums), and Drake Kennedy (bass). 2021 saw the release of the heartfelt hit single “Come What May,” which topped the Christian Airplay chart and peaked at number two on Hot Christian Songs. It appeared on the band’s third long-player, Wholehearted, which matched Power’s chart success when it peaked at number 15 on the Christian albums chart. In the meantime, Vince Gill joined We Are Messengers on a version of their song “Image of God,” and a seasonal EP, Saviour, arrived before the end of 2022. Its title track was another Top Three airplay hit. 2023 brought of a version of “Wholehearted” featuring KB.
